A CEO at California-based tech company MongoDB is making headlines after he posted an open letter on his blog about why he decided to leave his executive position. Max Schireson says that while he loves his job, he regrets missing big moments with his family, like when his son had surgery or when the children’s puppy was hit by a car.
While working moms are frequently asked how they manage to “have it all,” Schireson notes that he was never once asked about balancing work and family during his time as a CEO. However, he says that his grueling work and travel schedule took a toll.
“I recognize that by writing this I may be disqualifying myself from some future CEO role,” Schireson wrote on his blog. “Will that cost me tens of millions of dollars someday? Maybe. Life is about choices. Right now, I choose to spend more time with my family and am confident that I can continue to have an meaningful and rewarding work life while doing so. At first, it seemed like a hard choice, but the more I have sat with the choice the more certain I am that it is the right choice.”
Schireson told The Today Show that for him it’s not just about being there more, it’s also about being more “there.”
