A Georgia man killed by a small plane as it crashed on a Florida beach wrote a poignant Facebook post about his wife just hours before his death, according to CNN’s national wire service. Ommy Irizarry was walking with his 9-year-old daughter Oceana when they were hit by the aircraft, which was attempting to make an emergency landing.
Irizarry was killed, while Oceana was critically hurt and taken to a nearby hospital, The Washington Post reports. She later died from her injuries.
Shortly before the accident, Irizarry wrote this social media post:
“Today, 9 years ago, I tied my life to my beautiful wife, Rebecca Irizarry. Wow, how fast time has passed! They say time flies when you are having fun. It is true. Thank you for being with me through thick and thin. I love you with all my heart, mi Roma. I am very happy and can’t wait to see what the next 100 have in store for us. I love you, Becci.”
The pilot and his passenger were not injured. They had reportedly radioed in distress to air traffic control just before the crash, saying that they would not be able to reach the airport and planned to make an emergency landing on Caspersen Beach. In an apology issued this week, the pilot said he did not realize there was anyone on the beach and did not see the two victims.
Irizarry’s heartfelt message to his wife is a poignant reminder to all of us to tell our loved ones how much they mean to us while we still have the chance.
